FCC Wants to Strengthen Cellular Signal Boosters Guidelines
Mobile Burn: The new rules are designed to prevent interference with existing networks from cellular boosters in buildings and cars.
"The CTIA and wireless carriers have tried to ban the sale and use of cell phone boosters, claiming that the devices interfere with their networks and cause service interruptions, including emergency communication services. The boosters attempt to enhance the signal in poor coverage areas by amplifying and repeating incoming cellular signals. A side effect of the repetition is that certain signals get canceled out, resulting in the interference. AT&T complained of one incident in 2007, when a luxury yacht that utilized a cell phone booster caused almost 2,800 dropped calls and interfered with 81,000 other in the span of 21 hours."
