iOS Maintains Huge Lead Over Android

The Inquirer: Apple smartphone and tablet platform holds a significant market share lead over Google's Android operating system in Europe.

"Comscore's figures peg Apple's IOS installed base at 28.8 million, with Google's Android OS installed on 13.3 million devices. The figures include all Apple devices that run IOS including the Iphone, Ipad and Ipod Touch in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain."

"Despite Android's astronomical growth in the smartphone market, Apple's IOS still remains top dog when tablets and media players are also taken into account. Tablets based on Android have yet to take off with Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets only just starting to appear on shelves, however it is in the portable media player market that Apple really has massive lead over Android."

"As Comscore's figures include the Ipod Touch, it is not surprising to see Android so far back. Apple has enjoyed considerable success with the Ipod Touch, with Apple CEO Steve Jobs highlighting the popularity of the device as a handheld gaming unit. Surprisingly, few manufacturers have come out with Android based portable music players, giving IOS free reign over the high-end touchscreen media player market."
