iPad 3 Announcement Expected March 7
If current rumors prove true, the iPad 3 will be announced March 7, will start shipping to the U.S. two days later, and will cost $70 to $80 more than the iPad 2.
Apple is known to introduce and ship new iPads and, to a large degree, iPhones around the same time every year. Apple introduced the iPad 2 on March 2, 2011. The updated tablet became available just over a week later, on March 11.
As usual, Cupertino is close-lipped about the existence of a new iPad. That never stops the blogosphere and Twittersphere from speculating, of course.
Among the rumored iPad 3 features:
* Either a dual- or quad-core version of Apple's ARM-derived A6 processor.
* A larger battery.
* A 2048 x 1536 Retina-like display, compared to the current iPad’s 1024 x 768 display.
* Better front and rear-facing cameras.
* Siri virtual assistant technology.
* 4G network support.
For what it’s worth, Best Buy last weekend quietly began discounting all versions of the iPad 2 by $50, a sign that a new one may be waiting in the wings.
