Microsoft Giving Away $25 in Apps

Thinking about buying a new Windows Phone handset before the end of the year? If so, Microsoft will sweeten the deal with a prepaid $25 apps card. The card can be used to purchase Windows Phone apps or Xbox Live games.

The offer is good in the U.S. and in Puerto Rico, according to the Windows Phone blog. In order to receive the card, fill out an online form before February 14, 2012. The card will come to you through snail mail. You can get one card for each Windows Phone you buy, up to a maximum of five cards for five phones purchased.

While any offer for free apps is welcome, Microsoft may need to do more to help its Windows Phone platform gain ground against the iPhone and Android platforms. Currently, there are about 40,000 Windows Phone apps, according to All About Windows Phone, adding that the Windows Phone marketplace should have 50,000 apps by mid January. By comparison, there are over 500,000 iOS apps and over 320,000 active Android apps. (Approximately 37 percent of Android apps are removed after they are published, according to Research2Guidance.)
