Apple Delays White iPhone Release Date to 2011
The white iPhone 4 briefly appeared yesterday in the reservation inventory of the Apple online store, prompting speculation that the white iPhone 4 release date was imminent, but Apple is delaying the launch of the albino mobile device until Spring, according to news reports. "We're sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone again," Trudy Muller, Apple spokeswoman, told Reuters. Apple did not disclose details to Reuters explaining the cause of the delay, nor did the company return calls from EnterpriseMobileToday.com seeking comment on the issue. The iPhone 4 went on sale in June, but the white model was bumped to a July sales date, and then later delayed to the end of the year, and now with the early 2011 due date, customers are still left wondering why the fairer version of the popular smartphone is causing Apple production problems. To date, Apple has only said, in a statement, that the white iPhone 4 is "more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected."
Since then, rumors abound about the reasons holding up the launch of the fairer sibling to the black iPhone 4. These range from factors involving matching the shades of white on different parts of the device to suggestions that Apple may be fixing a design flaw that causes reception to cut out when the phone is held in a certain way that blocks the antenna. This latter issue, dubbed "antennagate," plagued the launch of the black iPhone 4, causing Apple to offer free bumper covers for a limited time. Meanwhile, sales of the black model are doing well, with Apple selling 14. 1 million phones in the third quarter.
