Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Running Honeycomb Coming Soon
The new version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab will include a 10.1-inch screen, a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, dual high-res cameras and will run Android 3.0 -- the mobile OS backed by Google that's dubbed Honeycomb that's designed to optimize tablet PC performance. Details of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the follow-up to the Samsung Galaxy Tab, were just revealed by the electronics giant at the Mobile World Congress conference, though launch dates for the U.S. and pricing have yet to be disclosed. Asia and Europe, however, will get the new Tab in March on the Vodafone network. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 will offer 16GB or 32GB of storage, has a front-facing 2-megapixel camera as well as an 8-megapixel one on back, a 1280 x 800-resolution 10.1-inch TFT display and weighs 1.2 pounds and is less than a half-inch thick. News of Samsung's next-gen tablet PC comes at a time when the slate computer sector is experiencing a renaissance. Since the iPad debuted last summer, and realized phenomenal sales success, the tablet space has started to heat up as competitors enter the mix, trying to snatch market share from Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL). Driven by sales of the iPad, worldwide tablet sales were expected to reach 19.5 million for 2010, and are projected to total 54.8 million units in 2011, up 181 percent from 2010, and surpass 208 million units in 2014, according to research firm Gartner.
The majority of developments involve tablet PCs running Google's Android OS. In addition to Samsung, manufacturers prepping or already selling Android tablets include Motorola, Asus, Acer, Archos, Viewsonic, Dell and Cisco. Financial services provider BMO Capital Markets also recently predicted that the number of Android tablets expected to ship in the second half of 2011 will match those of Apples iPad. The analysts reported their projections in a Jan. 10 research note accompanied by a conference call for investors, according to Elizabeth Woyke of Forbes. "The driving force is the number of manufacturers who are rushing out Android tablets this year. BMO expects at least 25 to 30 tablets from nearly 20 manufacturers by mid-year, citing Asus, Coby, Fujitsu, HP, HTC, Lenovo, Motorola, MSI, Toshiba, ViewSonic and Vizio, among others. Most of these companies plan to release at least one Android tablet. In addition, BMO believes that Android tablets will benefit from their compatibility with Flash since the iPad does not support Adobes multimedia platform," she wrote in a recent blog post on Android tablets.
Meanwhile, Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM), HP (NASDAQ: HPQ) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) are also planning to offer slate PCs this year, though they won't be powered by the Android OS. As the tablet sector emerges as one of the hottest trends of the year, Forrester Research predicts that one in three Americans will own a tablet PC by 2015, and last month revised its forecast for the market. "Forrester published its revised US consumer tablet forecast, updating its previous forecast from June 2010. When Apple's iPad first debuted, we saw the device as a game-changer but were too conservative with our forecast. Since then, we've fielded additional consumer surveys and an SMB and enterprise survey, conducted additional supply-side research, and seen more sales numbers from Apple. "All of these inputs have led us to revise our US consumer tablet forecast for 2010 upward to 10.3 million units, and we expect sales to more than double in 2011 to 24.1 million units. Of those sales, the lion's share will be iPads, and despite many would-be competitors that will be released at CES, we see Apple commanding the vast majority of the tablet market through 2012," Sarah Rotman Epps, consumer mobile device analyst at Forrester, wrote in a blog post about the tablet reports.
